Founders Azacca IPA

Founders Azacca (A)IPA is 7 ABV and 70 IBU, the name refers to the hop.  Appearance is golen amber and the nose pungent tropical hop.  The flavor is your basic sweet malt balanced with those big and pungenttropical Azacca hop notes.  Mouthfeel is moderate but has a welcome creaminess.  Azacca is a solid IPA featuring those Azacca hops extremely well.  I am finding this hop a bit acidic but that’s probably just a personal note.  Either way it’s solid.

Good Nature Brown Ale

Good Nature Brown Ale is 6.2 ABV and 43 IBU and uses Perle and Fuggle hop.  The appearance is cola black with virtually no head and the nose sweet caramel and toffee. The flavor edges more sweet chocolate along with those nutty notes finishing with an earthy dark chocolate bitterness.  The mouthfeel is moderate but has a full rounded sticky thickness.   This one is throwing me a bit, especially given the complete lack of head.  I’ll be sure to try this one again but as it stands it’s quite interesting, easily recommended if you could find it.

Smuttynose Farmouse Ale

Smuttynose Farmhous Ale, part of their big beer series, is a 7.3 ABV 15 IBU Saison brewed with Sage.  The appearance is hazy orange and the nose vegetal sage.  The flavor follows, very mild and moderate with that clear sage spice throughout.  The overall feel is moderate and crisp as well and the relatively high abv all but hidden.  This is a real sleeper, indeed it didn’t stand out at the time but I wouldn’t mind trying it again.  That sage note is very interesting in a beer and works particularly well in a saison.  I’d definitely recommend this one.

Allagash White

Allagash White is a Witbier and 5.1 ABV.  The appearance is pale orange and the nose spice and banana.  The flavor follows, wheat malt spice, namely coriander, with notes of citrus and banana throughout.  The finish is lightly bittersweet and the mouthfeel smooth and pleasant.  Witbier’s are never a personal favorite but this one is spot on.  Allagash is certainly top notch, easily recommended.

Troegs Nugget Nectar

Troegs Nugget Nectar is a 7.5 ABV 93 IBU Amber / Red.  Appearance is amber and the nose hoppy caramel malt.  The flavor follows, hopped up caramel malt finishing with a big hop bitterness.  Overall mouthfeel is moderate but has a soft creaminess, only enhancing the sweetness of the malts.  It’s really quite good, Nugget Nectar is a classic hopped up amber.  Definitely recommended.

Ballast Point Even Keel Session IPA

Ballast Point Even Keel Session IPA is more of a pale ale, 3.8 ABV and 40 IBU.  The appearance is light bubbly orange and the nose piney hop.  The flavor is a light balance of sweet malt and pine hop.  Overall mouthfeel is light and crisp.  The hop taste is very nice here even if the overall effect is very light, of course given the 3.8% it’s designed to be that way.  For my preferences I don’t mind my session APA’s being a percent higher but overall it’s very nice, Ballast is top notch.

Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Mango Astronaut Ale

Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Mango Astronaut Ale is a 5.5 ABV fruit / veg.  The appearance is amber and the nose doughy mango fruit.  The flavor is very strong syrupy mango and citrus fruit on top of a malty base, finishing mildly bitter.  Mouthfeel is smooth and moderate.  This is a curious one, it’s handled deftly by Rogue but the sweetness got a bit much for me, especially as it warms, even sharing the bomber.  It’s a novelty more than a beer but that’s fine, certainly worth trying.

Sam Adams Rebel Grapefruit IPA

Sam Adams Rebel Grapefruit (A)IPA is 6.3 ABV and 52 IBU.  Appearance is hazy orange and the nose mostly citrus hop.  The flavor is a pretty standard AIPA with sweet malt in balance with bitter citrus hop.  The grapefruit component does add a bit of citrus juiciness.  Overall mouthfeel and texture are moderate.  It’s a decent beer from Sam Adams but not as good as some other grapefruit enhanced IPA’s that are out there.  Sam Adams is still not where I’m going for good IPA’s.

Stone Pataskala Red X IPA

Stone Pataskala Red X IPA is an American Amber, 7.3 ABV and 75 IBU.   Hop package is Amarillo, Cascade and Mosaic.  The appearance is ruby red and bubbly, the nose caramel malt and pungent hop.  The palate is that of a very hopped up amber, with sweet caramel malt finishing a strong pine bitterness.  Mouthfeel is smooth with a measure of creaminess and depth of flavor.   Pataskala works, I can’t readily think of a better, fairly easily accessible hopped up Amber.  It’s a nice one to sip on but that overall sweetness would make this hard to have more than one or two.
